Rooted Wisdom – July Gardening Guide
Winter may be in full swing, but your garden can still thrive. This is an ideal time to plant winter vegetables, refresh your fruit garden, and add seasonal colour to your flower beds. Whether you're cultivating food or flowers, mid-winter offers a wealth of opportunity to nurture your outdoor space.
🌱 Vegetable & Herb Gardens
Continue planting winter vegetables, especially hardy leafy greens and brassicas. These cool-season crops flourish in lower temperatures and help keep your garden productive year-round.
Recommended Winter Vegetables:
  • Broccoli
  • Beetroot
  • Onions
  • Shallots
  • Garlic
  • Cabbage
Herbs to Plant Now:
  • Garlic
  • Shallots
  • Sage
  • Coriander
  • Rocket
🍓 Fruit Garden Focus
July is the perfect time to establish new fruit trees and soft fruits. Take advantage of the dormant season to plant strawberries, raspberries, and deciduous fruit trees such as apples and apricots.
Ideal Fruit Plantings:
  • Apple trees
  • Apricot trees
  • Peach trees
  • Nectarines
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
Pruning is also essential this month. Trim grapevines by cutting back lateral branches to two buds — the starting point for spring growth. Prune blueberries, gooseberries, currants, and autumn-fruiting raspberries to encourage healthy yields.
🌸 Winter Colour in the Flower Garden
Inject vibrancy into your winter garden with seasonal blooms. Many winter flowers thrive in cooler conditions and provide a beautiful contrast to bare branches and muted landscapes.
Flowers to Plant in July:
  • Roses
  • Poppies
  • Polyanthus
  • Snapdragon
  • Pansies
  • Calendula
✂️ Winter Pruning Tasks
Now is the time to shape and rejuvenate your deciduous trees and shrubs. Focus on:
  • Pruning wisteria and shrubs that flower on new wood
  • Cutting back pip and stone fruit trees
  • Applying a copper oxychloride spray post-pruning to protect against fungal diseases

By staying active in your garden this winter, you're laying strong roots for a flourishing spring. As always, at Roy’s Garden and Property Care Ltd, we’re here to help you weed out mediocrity — one garden at a time.
